SongMakers Workshop: Don College/Devonport High

Written By: Hill, Maher, Armstrong & Siely
What I like:
I remember Grace and her group asking me for help on where to start because every member had such different tastes in music and life. Finally the awareness of global warming and our footprints brought them together. I love this song. It is super strong from a pop-songwriting perspective but also talks about a very important and relevant topic.

BETTER
SongMakers Workshop: Don College/Devonport High
Mentors: Katie Wighton, JP Fung
Written By: Tueon, Armstrong, Ryan & Horing
What I like:
I feel teary every time I listen to this song. The amount of emotion in which Piper performs these well-written lyrics is breathtaking. You can hear the group and she were going through their own struggles in life but were so brave in sharing and facing via the healing process of songwriting and music.

BREATHE
SongMakers Workshop: New Norfolk High/Jordan River Learning Federation/Claremont College
Mentors: Katie Wighton, JP Fung
Written By: Orr, Mapley, Russell, Belbein & James
What I like:
I wish more groups adventured into the world of rap during these workshops. I also wish more groups adventured into the world of vulnerability and anxiety. This song ticks both boxes in a very cool way.

What I like:
Every student in this SongMakers workshop had a genuine love for their hometown (and for good reason). This song sums up their love in a youthful and descriptive way.

EAST COAST

Mentors: Katie Wighton, JP Fung
Written By: Malley, Casboult, Barnes & Broughan
What I like:
This is the first time we’ve ever had the entire group of 16 students chanting their hometown like a football team. This song makes me want to live on the East Coast of Tas.

YOUR EYES

Mentors: Rai Thistlethwayte, Robert Conley
Written By: Waller, Goldsmith, Waldie & Wright
What I like:
“It’s your choice to see the diamonds in the rough, I know it’s tough. If you want to feel, open your eyes.” So much to love about this song, from the melodic choices to the banging guitar solo. But for me it’s all about the call to action at its heart: dig deep, you’ve got this.

OUT OF TOUCH
SongMakers workshop: Claremont College/Rosny College/Hobart College/Taroona High/Elizabeth College
Mentors: Rai Thistlethwayte, Robert Conley
Written By: Pears, Quick, Atwal & Pritchard
What I like:
A phones-in-the-air power ballad, all lushed-up with tasty piano licks and strings and some clever lyric choices that drive it along: ‘Out of touch, but I’m still feeling; Out of tune, but I’m still singing. Walking, the world is standing still.”

ONE MORE DAY
SongMakers Workshop: Launceston College/Riverside High
Mentors: Rai Thistlethwayte, Robert Conley, Katie Wighton
Written By: Webster, Griffiven, Dean & Goodwin
What I like:
When we play songs back at the end of the two days, there’s always electricity in the air and some songs really lift the room. This is a great example and one of the earworm songs that stay in your head. Great vocals, great retro guitar break, a perfect-match lyric and melody and a driving lift into the chorus. It’s a song about loss where everything about this works.
