When making music, your ears are your most valuable tool - protect them so you can keep creating for years to come!
Here’s how to stay safe and avoid hearing damage.
1. Volume Control
Follow the 60/60 Rule
Listen at no more than 60% volume for no more than 60 minutes at a time. Take breaks to give your ears a rest.
Watch the Peaks
Sudden loud sounds can cause damage. Use limiters in your DAW to prevent unexpected volume spikes.
2. Take Listening Breaks
- Give your ears a rest every hour—step away from the music, go for a walk, or sit in silence for a few minutes.
- If your ears feel muffled or ring after a session, take a longer break before listening again.
3. Be Careful at Live Shows & Rehearsals
Wear Earplugs
At gigs or rehearsals, use musician earplugs that lower volume evenly without muffling sound.
Avoid Standing Right in Front of Speakers
The closer you are, the louder the sound pressure. Give your ears some space.
4. Know the Signs of Hearing Damage
- Ringing in your ears after exposure to loud music.
- Struggling to hear conversations after a long music session.
- Needing to turn up the volume more than usual.
If you notice these signs often, get your hearing checked! Prevention is key.
